  YAUCO, Puerto Rico -- "People are still very scared," Jonathan Santiago said of residents in Puerto Rico who endured a 6.4 magnitude earthquake early Tuesday morning (Jan. 7). The ensuing aftershocks and tremors have been ongoing, and it is nearly impossible to predict when they will cease.

• Calif. quakes prompt Southern Baptist response

  RIDGECREST, Calif. (BP) -- A group of local, church volunteers had finished a day of cleaning up and repairing damage to Immanuel Baptist Church, Ridgecrest, Calif., following a 6.4 earthquake on July 4. The next night, the 7.1 earthquake undid their hard work and then some.

  "I was at home with my wife for the 7.1," said Bill Logan, pastor of Immanuel Baptist. "There was a 5.0 that happened first. When it hit, we wanted to be out of the house. Then, about three minutes later, the seven hit, and all our neighbors were screaming." Read More

• BGR assessing Indonesia's needs after tsunami

  PALU, Indonesia (BP) -- Baptist Global Response is assessing needs on Indonesia's Sulawesi island after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami Sept. 28 killed at least 1,200 people, with the death toll expected to rise. More than 1.5 million people have been affected, according to initial reports.

  Volunteers prepared a mass grave for 1,300 in the hills above hard-hit Palu, Indonesia, the BBC reported, and decomposition forced at least one local hospital to begin burying bodies before relatives could pick up remains of their loved ones. The main airport in Palu was damaged, landsides have blocked roads and power outages are widespread. Read More

  LOMBOK, Indonesia (BP) -- A team trained by Baptist Global Response (BGR) was already at work on Indonesia's Lombok island when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake with strong aftershocks hit Sunday (Aug. 5), killing nearly 100 people.

  The team from BGR's Singapore office had deployed to the resort island several days before after a 6.4-magnitude quake had rocked Lombok on July 29, killing 16.

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- The death toll continues to rise after the deadliest earthquake of 2017 shook the Iran-Iraq border late Sunday (Nov. 12).

  More than 450 people have been killed and 7,000 injured in the 7.3-magnitude quake, with major aftershocks continuing to shake the region, extending into Turkey, Kuwait, Pakistan and Lebanon, according to CNN.

  MEXICO CITY (BP) --- In the aftermath of an earthquake in central Mexico that killed at least 217 people, Southern Baptists are moving to assess opportunities for response.

  The 7.1-magnitude quake struck Tuesday (Sept. 19), exactly 32 years after an even-larger tremor devastated large areas of Mexico City and killed about 10,000 people. This new earthquake was centered about 76 miles southeast of the city and affected five states. Read More

  NEPAL (BP) -- The Nepali man pulled brick after brick off a pile of rubble that was once his home. He passed along anything that was salvageable to his children to set aside. Finally, down in a hole, he found what he was looking for -- their food storage.
