  KHARTOUM, Sudan (BP) -- A court in Khartoum, Sudan, released a pastor from prison Jan. 2 after acquitting him of charges punishable by the death penalty, sources said.

  Kwa (also spelled Kuwa) Shamaal was acquitted of charges ranging from spying to inciting hatred against the government, his attorney Muhanad Nur said.

  JUBA, South Sudan (BP) -- Sudan has released one of two church leaders jailed since December, sources said, leaving another pastor incarcerated without charges.

  JUBA, South Sudan (BP) -- Sudanese authorities have released one of two pastors detained without charges since December 2015, Morning Star News reported Jan. 31.

  Kwa Shamaal, head of missions for the Sudanese Church of Christ (SCOC), was arrested Dec. 18 and released Dec. 21, but had been required to report daily to the office of the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), where he was held from 8 a.m. until midnight, sources said.   The charges, including espionage and promoting hatred among or against sects, were filed July 2, months after authorities arrested Yat Michael last December and Peter Yein Reith in January, both of South Sudanese origin, for their efforts to encourage a North Khartoum church in the face of a government-aided takeover of the church's property.
