  AMSTERDAM (BP) -- In the Netherlands, signatories of The Nashville Statement on biblical sexuality have been threatened with criminal prosecution, admonished by employers and derided by protests.

• Transgenders to enlist as Trump appeal continues

  WASHINGTON (BP) -- Transgender people will be able to enlist in the U.S. military beginning Jan. 1, the Department of Defense announced Monday (Dec. 11).

  The announcement followed a federal judge's ruling the same day that allowed a court order to remain in effect that blocked President Trump's ban on transgender people in the armed forces. • Evangelicals counter 'agree to disagree' sexuality

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- A coalition of evangelical leaders, including about 70 Southern Baptists, has issued a statement on biblical sexuality countering the idea that Christians "should agree to disagree" in their views of homosexual practice and transgenderism.

• Obama-era transgender bathroom order rescinded

  WASHINGTON (BP) -- The Trump administration has reversed an Obama-era directive that advised schools to open bathrooms and locker rooms to students based on their perceived sexual identity or risk losing federal funding.

  The new ruling leaves bathroom use policies to the discretion of state governments and local school districts, but the issue is already set to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court is scheduled on March 28 to hear a case from the Gloucester County School Board in Virginia challenging a lower court ruling allowing transgender teen Gavin Grimm to use the boys' bathroom at school.   WASHINGTON (BP) -- A letter is imminent from the Trump administration advising schools they are no longer encouraged to let transgender students use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their perceived gender identity, the Washington Post reported Feb. 21.

  The U.S. Departments of Justice and Education are expected to issue a letter today (Feb. 22) to schools across the nation reversing federal guidelines issued under the Obama administration, the Post said, based on a two-page draft of the letter the newspaper said it has obtained. Read More

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- A New York Times op-ed suggesting the Old Testament supports transgenderism has been classified by Southern Baptist seminary professors as a mischaracterization of Hebrew grammar and theology.

  "It should not surprise any of us that if we want to find something in Scripture, then we will twist it to say what we want it to say," Paul Wegner, professor of Old Testament studies at Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, told Baptist Press. "[Op-ed writer] Mark Sameth has pointed out some oddities in the Hebrew Bible, but it is doubtful that they mean what he thinks." Read More

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- An association of pediatricians has released a research paper citing scientific evidence that permitting gender-confused adolescents to impersonate the opposite sex through surgery or hormone therapy is harmful.

  "The treatment of [gender dysphoria] in childhood with hormones effectively amounts to mass experimentation on, and sterilization of, youth who are cognitively incapable of providing informed consent," the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) stated in an Aug. 3 document titled "Gender Dysphoria in Children." • Iowa churches counter gender identity law

  DES MOINES, Iowa (BP) -- Two Iowa churches say the Iowa Civil Rights Commission's interpretation of a state civil rights law could force them to open restrooms to members of the opposite sex and inhibit their ability to teach biblical truth about gender.

  One of the churches, Fort Des Moines Church of Christ in Des Moines, filed a lawsuit in federal court July 4. The other, Cornerstone World Outreach in Sioux City, sent a demand letter to the Iowa Civil Rights Commission July 5 asking the Commission to amend its policy regarding churches and gender identity discrimination.
