  • Federal finding on transgender athletes applauded

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Southern Baptist ethics specialists have praised a Trump administration finding that Connecticut's athletic association and multiple school districts violated federal law by permitting biological males to compete against females in athletic events.

    The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) informed the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) and the school districts of its decision that they had disobeyed Title IX, the 1972 law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs, including athletics. By allowing males who identified as females to complete in girls track meets, the CIAC and the schools "denied female student-athletes athletic benefits and opportunities," according to a May 15 letter from the OCR.     WASHINGTON (BP) -- The U.S. Supreme Court deliberated for two hours Tuesday (Oct 8) on whether longstanding, non-discrimination federal workplace law provides protection based on "sexual orientation" or "gender identity," and at least some justices appeared persuaded it does.

    The high court heard oral arguments in two consolidated cases addressing "sexual orientation," followed by arguments in an appeal regarding the "gender identity" issue. In the arguments, the high court was urged to rule that the classification "sex" in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act applies to those categories. Read More

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Non-discrimination protections in federal workplace law do not cover "sexual orientation" or "gender identity," the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and other faith-based organizations have told the U.S. Supreme Court.

    The ERLC signed onto friend-of-the-court briefs filed Aug. 23 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) that urge the high court to rule that the classification "sex" in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act does not include "sexual orientation" or "gender identity." Read More

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into a Connecticut high school sports policy that allows athletes who identify as transgender to compete against the opposite biological sex.

    The families of three female high school track athletes complained in June to the Education Department's Office of Civil Rights that the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference policy discriminates against them. Read More

    TOPEKA, Kan. (BP) -- The child welfare agency in Kansas reportedly wants foster parents to affirm the gender identities of transgender children. But the move could significantly decrease the number of available families in a state with a record-high number of foster children.

    Under the direction of Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) distributed a document to child-placing agencies ahead of a regularly scheduled meeting in July. The informal three-page paper defined a handful of controversial terms, including gender expression, gender identity, and transgender. Read More

    AUGUSTA, Maine (BP) -- Maine Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill into law Wednesday (May 29) that reportedly prohibits so-called "conversion therapy" for minors struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction.

    The law defines conversion therapy as "any practice or treatment that seeks or purports to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity," but it says the definition does not include "any practice or treatment that provides acceptance, support, and understanding to an individual."   • Father barred from calling daughter 'she'

    VANCOUVER, British Columbia (BP) -- A father in Canada has committed "family violence," according to a Canadian court, for referring to his teenage daughter as a female in spite of her desire to transition to a male gender identity.

    The Supreme Court of Canada's British Columbia province issued a "protection order" barring the father from referring to his daughter publicly or privately by her birth name or female pronouns. He also was barred from "attempting to persuade [her] to abandon" her gender transition, according to an April 15 court ruling. Read More

  • SCOTUS: Trump's ban on trans military service stands

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday (Jan. 22) to allow the enforcement of President Trump's ban on transgender military service, a ban previously frozen by lower court injunctions.

    The policy immediately stops transgender persons from entering the military except "under certain limited circumstances," according to media reports. It was first announced by Trump via Twitter in July 2017 and then tweaked in March 2018 to help it pass through lower courts attempting to block it. See related Baptist Press report. Read More

    ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) -- The success of LGBT activists in dictating how therapists counsel minors about sexuality and gender dysphoria reportedly continues to gain momentum as 2019 begins. Some pro-LGBT groups want to make it illegal for therapists to encourage children to embrace heterosexuality or their biological sex and expect legislative victories in at least four states this year: Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts and New York.

    Fourteen states and the District of Columbia, as well as cities and municipalities in seven other states, have laws against so-called "conversion therapy" on the books. Last week, the Denver City Council reportedly voted unanimously to similarly restrict therapists. Read More
