  • Southern Baptists virtually celebrate sending 61 missionaries

    RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – The International Mission Board (IMB) commissioned 61 missionaries in a virtual Sending Celebration on Tuesday (June 9). The missionaries represent churches in 15 states and will be serving in all nine of the IMB’s affinities.

    Sending Celebrations provide a forum for Southern Baptists to commission new missionaries and hear their call to missions. IMB trustees voted on and approved 59 of the missionaries this spring in a virtual board meeting. Two missionaries were appointed in January. Read More

    RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- As airlines reduced flights and countries around the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some International Mission Board (IMB) missionaries found themselves unexpectedly back in the United States.

    In an early April email to all overseas personnel, IMB president Paul Chitwood wrote that if any felt God leading them to leave their current country due to COVID-19, "we will fully support you as you follow his direction.     RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- International Mission Board trustees gathered at Ridgecrest Conference Center Sept. 11-13 to celebrate more than 25,000 years of service by emeritus missionaries while approving the appointment of 51 new personnel to take the Gospel to unreached people and places.

    The fall meeting near Asheville, N.C., also included orientation for 11 new trustees; approval of a balanced budget for 2017-18; and concerted prayer for specific needs representing every region of the world. Read More

    NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Joseph Somkhith* understands the plight of today's 60 million refugees. He once lived as one.

    Somkhith was 10 years old when he and his brother fled Laos after a communist takeover in the mid-1970s. The two boys crossed the Mekong River into Thailand, facing what Somkhith described as "insecurity and violence" along the way. Nearly a year later, Somkhith's family was reunited in a refugee camp in Thailand. Read More

    GARLAND, Texas (BP) -- Pastor Nguyen Xuan Ha relayed the message to the children and workers of the Cam Ranh City Orphanage that the South Vietnamese army could not stop the communist juggernaut.
