  • Iraq-Syria genocide bill draws praise

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The head of the Southern Baptist Convention's religious freedom entity and his fellow advocates have praised bipartisan congressional action to help Christians and other survivors of genocide committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

    The House of Representatives approved without opposition Nov. 27 the Iraq and Syria Genocide Relief and Accountability Act, H.R. 390, and sent it to President Trump. The Senate passed the bill in October, also without opposition.

    The measure will provide humanitarian aid to Christians, Yazidis, Shia Muslims and other religious and ethnic minorities in the two Middle East countries. It also will support criminal investigations and prosecutions of the terrorists responsible for genocidal acts and crimes against humanity. Read More

  • Greear joins call for genocide label in Myanmar

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear has joined a diverse coalition in urging the Trump administration to label as genocide the brutalities against religious and ethnic minorities in Myanmar.

    Greear and more than 75 other signers sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Oct. 17 requesting the official designation in response to what they described as the Myanmar military's "planned, coordinated campaign of mass killings, gang rapes and other atrocities" against the country's Rohingya Muslim minority.     GENEVA (BP) -- Murder, rape, enslavement and other crimes against Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims necessitate the country's military leaders be charged with genocide, the United Nations said Aug. 27.

    "Criminal investigation and prosecution is warranted, focusing on the top Tatmadaw generals, in relation to the three categories of crimes under international law," the U.N. said in a special report, accusing the generals of "genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes." Read More

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The United States finally needs to act in keeping with its designation a year ago that the Islamic State's murderous campaign against Christians and other minorities in the Middle East is genocide, religious freedom advocates said.

    The calls for action came on the occasion of the first anniversary of then-Secretary of State John Kerry's classification of ISIS' atrocities in Iraq and Syria as genocide. Neither the United States nor the United Nations have followed up that March 17, 2016, designation by Kerry -- who served in the Obama administration -- with suitable justice for the terrorists or humanitarian assistance for their victims, critics said.
