  RAPID CITY, S.D. (BP) -- The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August will be the final time the Dakota Baptist Convention will host its annual evangelism thrust that began at the iconic biker gathering in 2006.

Charles, pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., will be a main speaker at the 67th annual observance in Washington. • 'Extraordinary' prof. inspires LU theatrical release

  LYNCHBURG, Va. (BP) -- Liberty University professor and alumnus Scotty Curlee was once ready to abandon his education, unable to pay the bills. His professor David Horton stepped in with more than encouraging words, handing Curlee a $1,000 check.

  "I knew that I am one of several students that Dave gave a $1,000 check to, and that's one aspect that really touched me studying under Dave," Curlee, a Liberty University (LU) theatrical arts professor, told Baptist Press. Curlee directed and co-wrote with colleague Cheryl Mckay the screenplay for the upcoming film "Extraordinary," based on Horton's life.

  The school is calling Extraordinary unique for being the first university-created film with a national theatrical release, a one-night run Sept. 7 in select theaters. Read More

• LGBT protesters few, use SBC logo on flyers

  PHOENIX (BP) -- A protest that an LGBT advocacy group had billed as "historic" was hardly noticeable on the opening day of the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Phoenix, bystanders said. But flyers distributed by the group included the SBC 2017 logo and theme.

  About 50 people appeared to join in Faith in America's (FIA) protest asking the SBC to remove homosexuality and transgenderism from the "sin list." They distributed flyers and engaged messengers in conversation outside the Phoenix Convention Center before disbanding around 1 p.m., bystanders told Baptist Press. The exact number of protesters was difficult to judge, separated in groups of two or so and blended in with passersby, witnesses said. Read More
