    NASHVILLE (BP) -- A petition protesting a same-sex wedding in the animated PBS children's show "Arthur" garnered thousands of signatures in its first day online.

    Meanwhile, Ken Ham, founder of the Answers in Genesis (AiG) apologetics ministry, said the gay wedding depiction illustrates "you can't trust what your kids may watch on PBS."

    "Arthur" -- a PBS Kids show chronicling the adventures of an elementary school-aged, anthropomorphic aardvark -- included in its season 22 premier May 14 the same-sex wedding of the title character's teacher Mr. Ratburn, according to media reports. Read More

    PARIS (BP) -- A fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris -- lamented in media reports as the marring of a historic French symbol -- has deep theological significance some observers may have missed, say evangelical scholars of culture and art.

    "Notre Dame is the handiwork of those who self-identified as Christian, and it testifies to the essential Judeo-Christian heritage of Europe," said Mark Coppenger, a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary philosophy professor who supervises doctoral students studying Christianity and the arts.   • Social justice statement spurs 'productive conversation'

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Amid ongoing discussion of social justice in the Southern Baptist Convention, more than 5,500 people -- many of them Southern Baptists -- have signed a statement claiming "lectures on social issues" in the church and "activism aimed at reshaping the wider culture" "tend to become distractions that inevitably lead to departures from the gospel."

    Since its publication Sept. 4, the Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel, with Bible teacher John MacArthur as the lead signatory, has drawn diverse reactions from Southern Baptists. The statement stemmed from a June 19 meeting in Dallas involving 14 evangelicals of various denominations. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Channel One, the daily TV newscast for schoolchildren that once drew criticism from a Southern Baptist Convention resolution, announced it has ceased its daily broadcasts.

    The announcement was greeted with celebration from the conservative group Eagle Forum, which said in a July 11 news release Channel One's 12-minute newscast for "a captive audience" of public school students included commercials that "encouraged materialism" and promoted movies with "inappropriate behavior not condoned by parents."     NASHVILLE (BP) -- Amid news of Starbucks diversity training and the cancellation of ABC's "Roseanne" over a racist tweet by its star, two African American Southern Baptists have noted ways to increase cultural sensitivity among followers of Christ.

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Does the debate over whether an internet audio clip is saying "yanny" or "laurel" have any spiritual relevance for Christians? Professors at two Southern Baptist institutions think it might.

    Despite the audio clip's peculiar ambiguity, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary philosophy professor Mark Coppenger said it highlights the fact God made the world "reliably accessible" to our senses -- despite claims to the contrary by a millennia-long string of philosophers including the Greek thinker Pyrrho and Enlightenment scholar David Hume. Union University physicist Bill Nettles said the online debate shows "true knowledge" is accessible through scientific investigation, but it takes "a lot of hard work." Read More
