    ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- As COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the United States, many medical facilities have faced shortages of masks and other protective gear. In response, Southern Baptists have donated more than 228,000 sets of protective equipment to hospitals and healthcare workers in different states.

    YUACO, Puerto Rico (BP) -- The ground is still shaking as southern Puerto Rico continues experiencing aftershocks from earthquakes earlier this week. Send Relief staff and volunteers with local Southern Baptist churches have ramped up their service to residents.

    Thousands of people continue taking shelter either in sanctioned shelters or in non-traditional spaces such as vehicles and tents. Many locations in southern Puerto Rico, both medical facilities and grocery stores, are still relying on generator power to sustain their operations. Read More

    EL PASO, Texas (BP) -- Four veteran Disaster Relief chaplains from the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC) packed quickly to drive from different regions of the state to El Paso to minister to victims, families and the community following the Aug. 3 shootings at the Cielo Vista Walmart.

    The four men, all pastors, arrived in El Paso on Aug. 7 and began to serve. None is new to helping others deal with tragedy and grief. Read More

  • Calif. quakes prompt Southern Baptist response

    RIDGECREST, Calif. (BP) -- A group of local, church volunteers had finished a day of cleaning up and repairing damage to Immanuel Baptist Church, Ridgecrest, Calif., following a 6.4 earthquake on July 4. The next night, the 7.1 earthquake undid their hard work and then some.

    "I was at home with my wife for the 7.1," said Bill Logan, pastor of Immanuel Baptist. "There was a 5.0 that happened first. When it hit, we wanted to be out of the house. Then, about three minutes later, the seven hit, and all our neighbors were screaming." Read More

  • Record tornado outbreak draws So. Baptist response

    BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (BP) -- Southern Baptists in Ohio and Kentucky are on the ground and serving Ohio residents impacted by devastating tornadoes. According to the National Weather Service, a record 17 tornadoes hit Ohio on the evening of Monday (May 27).

    Authorities have reported one death due to the tornadoes and about 90 injuries. The storms were among 56 tornadoes that touched down across eight states, stretching as far west as Idaho and Colorado. Monday's damage comes in the midst of 13 straight days of tornadoes hitting the United States through Wednesday (May 29). More than 200 tornadoes struck the Midwest in that span. Read More

  • SBDR leaders honor key volunteers

    KANSAS CITY (BP) -- Southern Baptist Disaster Relief leaders and volunteers gathered Jan. 23 to honor those who exhibited great selflessness and determination in the aftermath of disaster. Around 150 people attended, representing 42 state convention teams and North American Mission Board (NAMB) staff.

    The event was part of SBDR leaders from across North America gathering to assess the previous year, discuss ways to enhance their effectiveness and recognize exemplary service. The majority of the 2019 annual meeting took place at Blue Valley Baptist Church in Overland Park, Kan. Read More

  • Typhoon Yutu work begins, other DR efforts continue

    SUSUPE, Saipan (BP) -- Typhoon Yutu overwhelmed a U.S. territory last week, the Commonwealth of Northern Marianna Islands (CNMI), which is part of the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention (HPBC). Meanwhile, Southern Baptists have been in the midst of organizing a response.

    On Oct. 24, Yutu reportedly swallowed the 67 square-mile island of Saipan, endangering the roughly 52,000 inhabitants. Saipan is the northernmost island of CNMI, roughly 3,860 miles west of Hawaii.

    As of Tuesday (Oct. 30), officials were still working to clear roads and repair the airport, said Darrell McCain, disaster relief director for HPBC. Only military and humanitarian relief were allowed to fly into the island. Read More

    PANAMA CITY, Fla. (BP) -- Hurricane Michael damaged at least 50 Southern Baptist church buildings in Florida and Georgia, according to initial estimates, with some virtually destroyed.

    JACKSON, Miss. (BP) -- Anticipated flooding from Tropical Storm Gordon has Southern Baptist volunteers on alert in three Gulf Coast states, and may extend responses in the already-flooded Midwest as Gordon moves inland.

    The storm will likely intensify to a Category 1 hurricane as it comes ashore between western Alabama and eastern Louisiana this evening (Sept. 4), the Weather Channel reported, but will quickly weaken again to a tropical storm as it moves inland, perhaps over Arkansas. Read More
