  CHINA (BP) -- DNA tests to check children for inborn talents are a burgeoning business in China and gaining popularity in the United States. But the genetic talent tests lack scientific accuracy and could psychologically harm children, some experts warn.

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- Research published in the journal Science ties an ancient mass extinction to global warming and predicts a similar doomsday scenario for modern humans if they don't curb climate change. But an evangelical paleontologist says the data researchers examined actually evidences Noah's flood.

  There was an ancient mass extinction, said Kurt Wise, a paleontologist who teaches at Truett McConnell University in Cleveland, Ga. "But it was not only millions of times worse and quicker than [secular researchers] have modeled, it was an event God promised never to repeat." • First gene-edited babies 'a bridge too far'

  HONG KONG (BP) -- Evangelical bioethicists have joined many of their secular peers in condemning research that reportedly led to the birth this month of the world's first genetically edited babies. In addition to echoing secular scientists' concern about so-called "designer babies," the evangelicals objected to destruction of embryos which occurred in the gene-editing process.

  The reported birth of genetically edited twins in China has not been confirmed, according to media reports, and the research has not been published in an academic journal. Chinese scientist He Jiankui, who led the project, is scheduled to discuss his work in Hong Kong at an international conference on gene editing that begins today (Nov. 27). Read More

• Nobel winner's evolution claims stir response

  STOCKHOLM, Sweden (BP) -- The winners of this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry have been hailed by the body to award the prize as demonstrating "the power of evolution."

  But scientists with Answers in Genesis (AiG) and the Discovery Institute say the Nobel laureates have made no such demonstration and, in fact, have illustrated the necessity of an intelligent designer for the existence of life.

  This year's Nobel-winning research "really has nothing to do with evolution in the sense of Darwin and the sense of going from molecules to man," said Georgia Purdom, a molecular geneticist with AiG, a young-earth creationist organization based in Petersburg, Ky. Read More

  ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) -- A landmark study published last month appears to push back on evolutionists' assumptions about human ancestry.

  DNA analysis of an ancient bone fragment, published last month in the journal Nature, concluded the fragment belonged to a 13-year-old girl with a Neanderthal mother and Denisovan father. Evolutionists generally consider Neanderthals and Denisovans to be two groups of ancient human relatives that share a common ancestor with modern humans, but who do not come from the same species, and who rarely if ever mated. • Pterodactyl bones' origin: Noah's flood or desert?

  PROVO, Utah (BP) -- A rare pterodactyl fossil discovered in Utah has been claimed by evolutionists as evidence that flying vertebrates lived in the desert 200 million years ago. But two scientists who are biblical creationists say the creature lived about 4,500 years ago, not in a desert and was found in a fossil layer created by the worldwide flood described in Genesis 6-9.

  One of the creationists also says the intricate design of the pterosaur -- the scientific name of the flying creature with a five-foot wing span -- suggests direct creation by God rather than Darwinian evolution.

  Although the researchers' article in the journal Nature, Ecology & Evolution "claims that the new fossil is found in deposits formed in a desert, young-age creationists would interpret the rocks in almost the opposite manner, arguing instead that the sediments were laid down during Noah's Flood," Kurt Wise, a Harvard-trained paleontologist who teaches at Truett McConnell University, told Baptist Press via email.   ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) -- The gift of speech, one of the capabilities that defines humans, appears to defy evolutionary explanations. Even now, a century and a half since Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species," scientists seem to be no closer to discovering how human language developed.

  For the past 20 years, science textbooks have taught students that two small genetic mutations, unique to humans, are responsible for human language. Time magazine reported in 2006 that these FOXP2 gene mutations may account for "the emergence of all aspects of human speech, from a baby's first words to a Robin Williams monologue." Read More

  ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) -- The recent discovery of a galaxy about 65 million light years away that appears to harbor no dark matter has flabbergasted astronomers who believe galaxies need dark matter to hold them together.

  "Finding a galaxy without any [dark matter] is completely unexpected; it challenges standard ideas of how galaxies work," Allison Merritt, one of the researchers, said in a statement. A paper describing the discovery appears in the journal Nature. Read More
