    HOUSTON (BP) -- Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) leaders and volunteers continue meeting needs and sharing the hope of the Gospel in response both to the ongoing pandemic and to natural disasters in their communities. The challenges presented by COVID-19 have necessitated adjustments, but SBDR has sought to ensure a continued presence and continued service.

    "I've been really encouraged to see Southern Baptists step up, encouraged but not surprised," said Sam Porter, national director of SBDR through the North American Mission Board (NAMB) and Send Relief.   • Disaster Relief volunteers respond to real-time disaster

    MONTROSE, Ark., (BP) -- On the morning of Jan. 16, two Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief (ABDR) volunteers found themselves responding to a present emergency -- a real-time disaster.

    ABDR, a subsidiary of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention (ABSC) primarily focuses on giving aid to communities where natural disasters have struck.

    While volunteers were working on repairing a roof damaged from recent tornados in the southeast Arkansas region, they noticed smoke billowing up just a few houses down the street. Read More

    FORT GIBSON, Okla. (BP) -- It has been nearly 18 years since the darkest day of Lonnie Rowan's life. On Dec. 31, 2001, Rowan fell into a brush fire on his Ft. Gibson, Okla., property. With burns over 35 percent of his body, doctors gave him a 1 percent chance to live.

    God's odds were much better.

  • SBDR shines 'ray of hope' after southern storms

    ALTO, Texas (BP) -- Southern Baptist Disaster Relief units have deployed across the South following a weekend of storms that caused at least eight deaths, injured dozens more and left damage from Texas to Georgia.

    In east Texas, DR units from both Texas Baptist Men and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention deployed after an EF-2 and an EF-3 tornado touched down. At least four people in Texas died, according to media reports, including two children who were killed when a pine tree fell on the car carrying them near Pollok, Texas. Read More

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BP) -- At the request of municipal and federal agencies, faith-based organizations in Albuquerque, N.M., including the Baptist Convention of New Mexico, are helping to house and feed more than 400 asylum-seeking migrants from South and Central America.

    "This is a different kind of response for us," said Ira Shelton, director of New Mexico Baptist Disaster Relief (NMBDR).   • Shutdown spurred ministry to 'broken nation'

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- When portions of the federal government shut down, Southern Baptists ramped up their ministries to furloughed federal workers across the country.

    President Trump announced today (Jan. 25) he would sign a bill opening the government until Feb. 15 while lawmakers finalize legislation to increase border security. Still, some federal employees missed their second paycheck, and the partial shutdown stretched into a record-setting 35th day.

    Amid the shutdown, Southern Baptists also attempted to bring Christian principles to bear on the legislative impasse between Trump and Congress regarding federal spending. Read More

  • After Calif. wildfire, 'God just keeps' providing

    MAGALIA, Calif. (BP) -- His town devastated by the deadliest wildfire in California history, Pastor Doug Crowder was leading Magalia (Calif.) Pines Baptist Church to serve 300-500 meals per day to the community. The problem was he had no bread to make the French toast his cook had planned for the next day's breakfast.

    That's when a man from a local food bank walked up and said, "Hi, I'm Chuck.... Our warehouse burned down, and we need to get rid of some stuff. Do you need any bread?"

    Such unexpected provision, Crowder told Baptist Press, repeatedly has sustained community ministry by Magalia Pines even though the congregation launched its effort weeks ago with no money and no food. Through their ministry, the church also has seen a spiritual harvest in Magalia, which was approximately half destroyed by November's Camp Fire. Read More

  • Baptist DR efforts endure crisis after crisis

    ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- In recent months, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) has diligently responded to both national and local crises across North America: two major hurricanes in the Southeast, wildfires in California, tornadoes across the United States and even a typhoon in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

    "Over the last few months, Southern Baptist volunteers have been responding practically nonstop," said Sam Porter, national director for disaster relief with the North American Mission Board (NAMB). "We have seen teams serve as far West as the island of Saipan in the Pacific Ocean to the East coast of the southeastern United States."

    The northern California towns of Paradise and Magalia were nearly wiped out by the Camp Fire that began Nov. 8 and lasted until Nov. 25. The fire destroyed nearly 14,000 homes and took at least 85 lives. Read More

  • UPDATED: DR teams on site after EF-3 rips central Ill.

    TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (BP) -- Illinois Baptist Disaster Relief (IBDR) volunteers were in Taylorville, Ill., one day after an EF-3 tornado damaged 500 structures there.

    Rare late-winter storms Nov. 30-Dec. 1 spawned tornadoes in Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma, killing one person in Missouri, CBS News reported. Though no fatalities have been reported in Illinois, the most severe damage was in Taylorville, some 25 miles southeast of Springfield, Ill., where at least 26 people were injured.

    Several houses in Taylorville were "flattened," and others had their roofs ripped off or saw "gaping holes" torn in their roofs, according to CBS. Read More
