• ETS meeting focuses on Reformation heritage

  PROVIDENCE, R.I. (BP) -- "The Heritage of the Reformation" was the theme at this year's annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society, where Southern Baptists delivered nearly a third of the gathering's presentations and Trinity International University President David Dockery was elected president.

  According to a count by Baptist Press, some 185 of the Nov. 15-17 meeting's approximately 600 presentations were offered by scholars with ties to Southern Baptist churches, Southern Baptist Convention seminaries and colleges that partner with Baptist state conventions. Read More

  LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- It is well known that the Reformation entailed a recovery of core New Testament doctrines regarding salvation and worship.

  Did it also involve a recovery of the Great Commission?

  In one sense, no. The Roman church had been involved in a variety of missional enterprises throughout the Middle Ages. But in another, much deeper sense, yes -- the Great Commission did have to be recovered because medieval missions all too frequently involved forcible conversions like those of the Saxons by Charlemagne in the eighth and ninth centuries and the Albigensian Crusade in the early 13th century.   NASHVILLE (BP) -- While most Reformation commemorations this year have focused on the likes of Martin Luther, John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli, some believers also have commemorated a lesser-known wing of the Reformation that sought to reform the Reformers -- the Radical Reformation.

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- Sola scriptura is among the most important Reformation principles for believers to understand and apply. That's the conclusion of at least some Southern Baptist Convention seminary professors on the Protestant Reformation's 500th anniversary.

  Sola scriptura (Latin for "by Scripture alone") is the doctrine that the Bible alone is humankind's infallible rule for faith and practice.

  'The highest functional authority'

  Chris Chun, associate professor of church history at Gateway Seminary, told Baptist Press the Reformation's 500th anniversary "might be an appropriate time to reflect if Scripture still is the highest functional authority in Southern Baptist life and practice." Read More
