    But in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Baptists on Mission, an auxiliary of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, is remaking itself as a food distribution network, delivering boxes of produce to people struggling to get by in a state where more than 1 million people have filed for unemployment benefits.   • Hollifield announces plans to retire as N.C. Baptist leader

    CARY, N.C. (BP) -- Milton A. Hollifield Jr., executive director-treasurer of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (BSC), has announced plans to retire effective Feb. 28, 2021.

    Hollifield, 70, has led the convention for 14 years and has served for a total of 27 years. He was elected as the 14th executive director-treasurer on April 11, 2006, during a special called meeting of the convention held at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Read More

    GREENSBORO, N.C. (BP) -- North Carolina Baptists commissioned more than 100 church planters and were called to prioritize personal evangelism during their 189th annual meeting held Nov. 11-12 at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C.

    The meeting drew 1,387 messengers and included two special worship services -- a church planting celebration and a service related to the Southern Baptist Convention's (SBC) "Who's Your One?" evangelism initiative that featured a message from Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the SBC Executive Committee.     ASHEBORO, N.C. (BP) -- Melanie Wallace was elected president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina's (BSCNC) board of directors, becoming the first woman elected as board president since 1993.

    Wallace was elected during the board's regularly scheduled fall meeting, held Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 23-24), at Caraway Conference Center near Asheboro. Wallace was elected after no other candidates were nominated. Read More

    SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (BP) -- Paul Fisher, the leader of a North Carolina Baptist mission team repairing roofs in Puerto Rico, died Feb. 28 in a swimming accident near San Juan. He was 36.

    GREENSBORO, N.C. (BP) -- North Carolina Baptists approved a 2019 budget, elected a new slate of officers and adopted a resolution honoring the late Billy Graham during the 2018 Baptist State Convention of North Carolina's (BSCNC) annual meeting, which emphasized loving one's neighbors and reaching them for Christ.

    A total of 1,425 messengers attended the meeting, which was held Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 5-6) at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C. The event's theme was "Who Is My Neighbor?" based on the question asked of Jesus in Luke 10:29 in the parable of the Good Samaritan. Read More
