    DALLAS (BP) -- People who lined up for meals recently at Cornerstone Baptist Church in blighted South Dallas had not been able to shower in a month and had no place to call their own while the city of Dallas is under a shelter-in-place order.

    Moving through the line while keeping six feet apart, each received a hot meal from church volunteers wearing protective gear and then wandered back into unsanitary conditions on the streets. Read More

    AUSTIN, Texas (BP) -- Residents at Austin's new 5-acre homeless encampment near Austin's international airport may have been uprooted from familiar surroundings under the city's 17 overpasses, but they are not going hungry, thanks to volunteers from various charities and faith-based groups, including Southern Baptists of Texas Convention Disaster Relief.

    Acting on orders from Gov. Greg Abbott, Texas Department of Transportation crews began clearing Austin homeless camps in early November, a response to the city's relaxation of ordinances prohibiting sleeping and camping in public spaces. Read More

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Jayson Albers, who grew up in a Baptist church, made a living for a long time as an opening shift supervisor for Ryan's steakhouse.

    "When they would start a new restaurant I would go in and train them on how to open the store," he said.

    BETHANY, Okla. (BP) -- It started with a magazine article that Eileen Atkins read about church members making mats out of plastic bags and giving them to the homeless.

    MOBILE, Ala. (BP) -- The barista stands smiling behind the counter while preparing drinks. Meanwhile, an unkempt, older man walks in: dirty blue jeans, a shirt several sizes too large, his face unshaven and burned from the sun.

    OMAHA, Neb. (BP) -- Rick Lechner says he speaks the language of the streets. A former drug addict and convicted criminal, the Southern Baptist preacher helps put a dent in homelessness in Omaha, Neb., as co-founder of Freeway Ministries.

    Omaha is one of 11 cities included in a new Baylor University study that found, on average, 58 percent of emergency shelter beds for the homeless in those cities are provided through faith-based organizations.     CONROE, Texas (BP) -- Jeff Foshee was at the end of his rope. Haunted by depression, fear, and his own misfortunes, he felt he could not hold on any longer.

    Thanks to a friend's guidance, Foshee's next step landed him at the Houston-area Under Over Fellowship in Conroe.
