    MIAMI (BP) -- In the middle of one of the highest COVID-19 surges worldwide, pastors serving Florida's hard-hit Hispanic community are suffering illnesses among their respective congregations while continuing their ministry.

    Emanuel Roque, Hispanic church catalyst with the Florida Baptist Convention (FBC), said in several Hispanic churches, pastors and some members have tested positive and are recovering. Included is El-Faro Baptist Church (Lighthouse Baptist Church) in Marathon, where many members were among a group of more than 20 who contracted the illness while attending a non-church related camp in Tennessee in June.     ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- The Florida Baptist Convention (FBC) "is a model in forwarding as much as possible through the Cooperative Program (CP) to encourage the forwarding of the Gospel to places the Gospel has never been before," said Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).

    The FBC sends 51 percent of annual financial receipts from its member churches through the SBC Cooperative Program (CP) as it retains 49 percent in the state. The decision to move to the 51/49 percent model was made by messengers at the 2015 Florida Baptist State Convention annual meeting in Panama City. Read More

    ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- More than 220 Florida Baptist pastors and leaders were challenged by Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee President Ronnie Floyd to mobilize messengers "for the sake of the Gospel" to attend the SBC annual meeting, June 9-10, 2020, in Orlando.

    During the Aug. 21 meeting held at First Baptist Church in Orlando, Floyd asked for the pastors to "begin a journey of casting a vision" that will bring "thousands and thousands" to the annual meeting. Read More

    BAKER, Fla. (BP) -- First Baptist Church of Milligan is recovering from a fire on Tuesday (July 9) that was likely caused by lightning from a thunderstorm, according to media reports.

    Pastor Charles Smith said he was the last one to leave the church building, located in Baker, Fla., around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. He received a phone call within the hour from the Okaloosa Sherriff's office telling him that the church was on fire. Read More

    PANAMA CITY, Fla. (BP) -- When Hurricane Michael barreled through the Florida Gulf Coast last October, it transformed the ministry of First Baptist Church in Port St. Joe. No longer could the church focus on only typical everyday ministry activities.

    After Michael, half of the church's families had lost their homes. Many had to move outside the area to find work and housing. The church's own building was battered so intensely that it was no longer usable. Marriages were stressed. Long-held family heirlooms were lost forever. Read More
