    GREENWOOD, Mo.—Ten years ago, after several years of decline, the future for a 175-year-old Southern Baptist church in Greenwood, Mo., seemed bleak. But a sister church in the area embraced the dwindling congregation and helped them recover their place in the community. In August, the reborn and growing church will host the North American Mission Board's Replant Summit to help others learn how to do the same.

    "The First Baptist Church of Greenwood has an incredible testimony," said Mark Clifton, senior director of Replant at the North American Mission Board (NAMB). "The Gospel witness of any church is far too important to allow it to fade when adversity comes." Read More

    LINWOOD, Kan. (BP) -- When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Linwood Baptist Church closed down, and its three remaining members did not plan to reopen. They thought it would be best to move on.

    They called real estate agent Mary Knapp, a member of First Baptist Church in nearby Basehor, Kan., to help sell the building. But when Mary and her husband Al heard of the plans to close the church, they felt God saying it was not quite time for that. Read More

    FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is establishing a Center for Church Revitalization, President Adam W. Greenway has announced. Kenneth Priest will serve as the center's interim director.

    ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- The North American Mission Board, in partnering with the new Revitalize Network initiated by Thom Rainer, will provide resources, tools and coaching to churches in need of revitalization outside the South.

  • Dripping Springs primed to reach sprawling Austin

    DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas (BP) -- First Baptist Church in Dripping Springs was about 20 miles from Austin when it was founded in 1875 in a community of about 200 people. But Austin's vast growth has reached Dripping Springs, and the church is positioned to reach the 35,000 living there now.

    Dripping Springs' population is projected to double in the next eight years, pastor Matthew Nance said. To address that growth, First Baptist is working to become a multigenerational congregation with emphases on ministry to Hispanic immigrants and on meeting practical needs in the community.   • Church revitalization drives pastor despite paralysis

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Face down on the floor of his hotel room, Dan Hall was fighting for every breath.

    In August of 2016, he had just gotten into Houston on a late flight, settled into his hotel after midnight and started getting ready for an early morning meeting. It was all routine. As a longtime Baptist pastor and church revitalization consultant, sleep deprivation was Hall's norm. He was used to solving churches' life-or-death crises.

    But this was different -- now he appeared to be having one of his own. He suffered a pulmonary embolism, passed out, fell down and woke up a quadriplegic. Read More
