  DAPHNE, Ala. (BP) -- Every four years messengers to the Alabama Baptist State Convention have traveled to the milder climate of south Alabama to worship, fellowship and conduct business.

  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- When Jennifer Davis Rash was getting ready to graduate from the University of Alabama (UA) in 1993, Jim Oakley had a plan for her life.

  "She was an ideal student for me to recommend because I knew she would do well and make me and our program both look good," said Oakley, then a career counselor and internship placement director for the College of Communication and Information Sciences at UA.

• Longtime Ala. Baptist editor announces retirement

  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- After 50 years of serving Baptist newspapers -- 43 of those years in the lead editor role -- Bob Terry is retiring Dec. 31.

  Terry, an Alabama native who became editor of The Alabama Baptist (TAB) in 1995, has repeatedly led the paper to rise to the top among its peers. For more than two decades, it has been named annually in the top three regional Christian newspapers.

• Ala. Baptists spotlight CP, Samford relationship

  HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (BP) -- For several years, the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) has been leading the Alabama Baptist State Convention (ABSC) to move its budget toward a 50–50 split of funds with Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministry causes. What started out as a gradual goal was accomplished this year as Samford University in Birmingham withdrew from state convention funding, freeing up $3.5 million.

  With that in mind, messengers to the annual meeting Nov. 14-15 at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, Ala., unanimously approved a $37 million budget for 2018 -- $3 million less than the current year's $40 million budget to be more in line with current giving receipts. Read More

  GARDENDALE, Ala. (BP) -- When Michaela Sanderson Guthrie was 11 years old, a social services caseworker gave her an unimaginable choice -- live with a family member or enter foster care.

  PELL CITY, Ala. (BP) -- Approving the relocation of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions' office and a flat $40 million Cooperative Program budget for 2017 topped business items addressed by messengers during their state convention annual meeting Nov. 15–16.

  Messengers also unanimously elected John Thweatt, pastor of First Baptist Church in Pell City, as president and adopted five resolutions, four of them related to social and religious issues. The convention theme for the 194th annual meeting was "Sent … Here, There and Everywhere." Read More

  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Jennifer Davis Rash has been named editor-elect of The Alabama Baptist newspaper in a succession plan for editor Bob Terry.

• New Ala. office building proposed for Jan. 2018

  MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) -- A proposal to relocate the Alabama State Board of Missions offices will be placed before messengers at the Alabama Baptist State Convention's Nov. 15–16 annual meeting in Montgomery.

  The proposal would involve an "exchange of keys" with Baptist Health, which operates hospitals and other medical facilities in central Alabama.

  If approved by messengers in November, SBOM ministry offices and staff would relocate -- without any indebtedness -- to a new facility by Jan. 1, 2018, built to SBOM specifications by Baptist Health near Interstate 65's exit 181 on the northeast side of Prattville, a city of 35,000 people. Just under four acres of land would be included with the new construction. Read More
