  DAPHNE, Ala. (BP) -- Every four years messengers to the Alabama Baptist State Convention have traveled to the milder climate of south Alabama to worship, fellowship and conduct business.

  OPELIKA, Ala. (BP) -- When President Trump signed Bibles in an Alabama region devastated by tornadoes, he was giving comfort to survivors by participating in a time-honored Southern tradition, some observers say. Others claim signing Scripture was inappropriate.

  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- When Jennifer Davis Rash was getting ready to graduate from the University of Alabama (UA) in 1993, Jim Oakley had a plan for her life.

  "She was an ideal student for me to recommend because I knew she would do well and make me and our program both look good," said Oakley, then a career counselor and internship placement director for the College of Communication and Information Sciences at UA.

  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- After 50 years of serving Baptist newspapers -- 43 of those years in the lead editor role -- Bob Terry is retiring Dec. 31.

  Terry, an Alabama native who became editor of The Alabama Baptist (TAB) in 1995, has repeatedly led the paper to rise to the top among its peers. For more than two decades, it has been named annually in the top three regional Christian newspapers.

• Ala. Baptists spotlight CP, Samford relationship

  HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (BP) -- For several years, the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) has been leading the Alabama Baptist State Convention (ABSC) to move its budget toward a 50–50 split of funds with Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministry causes. What started out as a gradual goal was accomplished this year as Samford University in Birmingham withdrew from state convention funding, freeing up $3.5 million.

  With that in mind, messengers to the annual meeting Nov. 14-15 at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, Ala., unanimously approved a $37 million budget for 2018 -- $3 million less than the current year's $40 million budget to be more in line with current giving receipts. Read More

  MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) -- New allegations of sexual misconduct against Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore emerged as Southern Baptists offered a range of commentary on the embattled social conservative.

  Moore's wife Kayla posted on Facebook Nov. 12 an endorsement of her husband by more than 50 pastors, some Southern Baptists. But Alabama's AL.com news website noted the endorsement appeared to be a "recycled" statement from Aug. 15, well before two women accused Moore of sexual contact with them when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s. Three pastors listed as signatories reportedly told media outlets the Moore campaign did not ask them if they still endorsed Moore before republishing the statement and asked that their names be removed.   MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) -- Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, a Southern Baptist long known for his support of Judeo-Christian values in the public square, has denied allegations he initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl decades ago.

  The allegations were published Thursday (Nov. 9) by The Washington Post, which claims Moore, 70, also pursued dating relationships with three other teenagers when he was in his early 30s. Read More

  MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) -- Roy Moore, the former Alabama chief justice known for his stands on same-sex marriage and a Ten Commandments monument, has won the Republican primary in a special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

  Moore, a Southern Baptist, referenced God frequently during the campaign and his victory speech, according to media reports. His election night party Sept. 26 in Montgomery, Ala., included the singing of hymns like "How Great Thou Art." Read More
