ORLANDO (BP) -- The 2020 Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference has been canceled, and its officers have asked the North American Mission Board to plan and produce the event in 2021.
The decision brings resolution to an event that had become controversial because of its planned lineup of speakers. David Uth, president of the 2020 Pastors' Conference and pastor of First Baptist Church of Orlando, said in a statement released Friday (April 17) that the officers had "prayerfully considered options" and "sought counsel" from SBC president J.D. Greear and some former SBC pastors' conference presidents. Read More

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BP) -- Dave Russell, pastor of Oakhurst Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C., has announced his intention to nominate Garrett Kell, pastor of Del Ray Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., for president of the 2021 Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference. The 2021 Pastors' Conference will be held in Nashville, Tenn., in conjunction with the 2021 SBC Annual Meeting. ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- SBC Pastors' Conference president David Uth has been granted an extended time for fasting and prayer before responding to the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee's stipulation that program adjustments be made before space is allocated at the 2020 SBC Annual Meeting venue.
Responding to dissension over the 2020 SBC Pastors' Conference (SBCPC) speaker roster, the SBC EC originally voted Feb. 18 to give the SBCPC until Feb. 24 to make suitable changes to its conference program to be granted space June 7-8 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- First Baptist Church of Orlando, Fla., has paid the full cost of the 2020 Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference, leaders said Monday (Feb. 17) in response to disagreement about speakers and performers slated for the June 7-8 event.
"We will not receive any financial support of any kind from any SBC entity or auxiliary," pastors' conference leaders said in a statement released by Matthew Robinson, First Orlando pastor of administration. "Our hope is that this will ease conflicts or tensions that exist over the slated program for the conference. The 2020 SBC Pastors' Conference is in no way being sponsored, controlled or paid for by the SBC, even though its purpose is still to bless and encourage SBC pastors and wives." Read More

ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- Speakers and music performers confirmed for the 2020 Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference have good relationships with First Baptist Church of Orlando and other Southern Baptists, conference president David Uth told Baptist Press Tuesday (Feb. 11).
"My goal, my prayer was that we could open ourselves up to hear from people that maybe were good friends of ours, but not in our Southern Baptist Convention," Uth said. "I feel like they have a message for us. I feel like God wants to speak to us through them.
