Tenn. evangelist Jerry Drace to be 2nd VP nomineeDALLAS (BP) -- Tennessee evangelist and pastor Jerry Drace will be nominated for second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Union University professor Ernest Easley announced today (May 16).
A vocational evangelist for more than 40 years, Drace has preached in approximately 1,000 Southern Baptist churches and conducted 300 of his signature Hope of the Home conferences in the U.S. and Great Britain. For the past eight years, he has served as bivocational pastor at Friendship (Tenn.) Baptist Church, the west Tennessee congregation his father once pastored and where Drace came to faith in Christ. SBC evangelism task force finalizes recommendationsFORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- With hopes of catalyzing "a fresh wave of evangelistic passion," the Southern Baptist Convention's evangelism task force has finalized its recommendations to the convention and will release them a week before the SBC annual meeting in Dallas.
The task force, appointed last June by SBC President Steve Gaines, held its third and final meeting May 14-15 at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to adopting its recommendations unanimously, the 19-member group elected Southern Baptist Theological Seminary administrator Adam Greenway as vice chairman. 2nd-gen cross-cultural pastors focus of Dallas panelDALLAS (BP) -- Second-generation Asian American pastors and others called to cross-cultural ministry are the focus of a panel discussion from noon to 1 p.m. June 12 in Dallas.
The 2nd-Generation Pastors and Planters Fellowship is open not only to Asian Americans, but second-generation pastors of any ethnic origin called to ministry outside their personal cultural groups in the U.S., said event organizer Thomas Wong.
"We just want to encourage that second generation -- who may not feel that they have resources, mentors or coaches -- that they can access guys like us," said Wong, president of the National Asian-American Second Generation Fellowship hosting the event. Read More
Dallas crowd anticipated largest since SBC 2010DALLAS (BP) -- Dallas attendance is in line to be the highest at a Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting since 2010, according to an event coordinator.

Gaines, pastor of Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn., specifically addresses the controversy involving past statements by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson on women, divorce and domestic violence. La. pastor announces plans to nominate HemphillDALLAS (BP) -- Louisiana pastor Brad Jurkovich has announced he will nominate Ken Hemphill for Southern Baptist Convention president at the convention's June 12-13 annual meeting in Dallas.
A coalition of Southern Baptists stated their intent to nominate Hemphill via Louisiana's Baptist Message newsjournal Feb. 1, but no specific individual was identified as volunteering to place the former Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary president's name in nomination. Read More
Ethnic breakdown of Gaines' appointments releasedDALLAS (BP) -- This year's Southern Baptist Convention Committee on Resolutions may be "one of the most ethnically diverse committees in the history of the SBC," convention president Steve Gaines said in a statement announcing the ethnic breakdown of his presidential appointments.
The Committee on Committees and the tellers each include 16 percent non-Anglo members, said Gaines, pastor of Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn. The Credentials Committee includes a lower percentage of non-Anglos (4 percent) because Gaines tapped for the other three groups most of the non-Anglos who were recommended to him and willing to serve, he said.
