• After storms, 'Mama Mills' leans on Bapt. relief

  HAVELOCK, N.C. (BP) -- Linda Mills, 70, has served others in her community for 42 years by hosting Sunday lunches from her cozy home in Havelock, N.C. Her humble service has earned her the affectionate moniker "Mama Mills."

  It all started when her husband Harold, who passed away 15 years ago, said "Mama, I'm bringing a little, starvin' Marine home," Mills said.

  From then on, her longtime ministry grew and became known as "The Lunch Bunch." She faithfully provided a home-cooked meal and a "home away from home" welcoming many young soldiers and others "who needed some extra love," she said. On Sundays, she cooked lunch for 20 to 40 guests usually. On one Easter, she fed 74. Most of her guests are young U.S. Marines from nearby U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, N.C.   BOSTON (BP)-- Luis Ortiz stepped into the shadow of the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston 25 years ago to make his Major League debut with the Red Sox.

  His career as a player, shortened by injuries and a playing field that wasn't always level, never blossomed. In an era when steroids abounded, Ortiz refused to take shortcuts to success.

  Tuesday night (Oct. 23), Ortiz stepped onto the field in Fenway Park once more, this time as the assistant hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers -- his childhood dream of making it to the World Series finally realized. • ERLC's new machines in Dallas 'more impactful'

  DALLAS (BP) -- Ultrasound machines -- like those placed recently at the Downtown Pregnancy Center in Dallas with the aid of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission -- not only help women choose life for their unborn children but create transformative personal stories.

  The ERLC announced Oct. 13 at its annual national conference in Grapevine, Texas, the donation of two machines to the Dallas center through the commission's Psalm 139 Project, its ministry to help place ultrasound machines in pregnancy resource centers across the country. The ERLC and Focus on the Family placed the machines this summer through their Evangelicals for Life (EFL) collaboration. Read More

• Museum of Bible outs fake Dead Sea Scrolls pieces

  WASHINGTON (BP) -- Five pieces of papyri passed off as fragments of Dead Sea Scrolls have been discovered as fake and removed from display at the Museum of the Bible (MOTB) in Washington.

  The museum founded by Hobby Lobby President Steve Green and family announced the discovery Oct. 22. The findings are based on a battery of tests MOTB commissioned months before the items were first displayed in 2017, MOTB said.

  Many scholars viewed the papyri with suspicion well before the discovery, biblical archaeology professor Daniel Warner told Baptist Press today (Oct. 24). Read More

• Nevada Baptists highlight 40-yr. legacy of God's work

  RENO, Nevada (BP) -- Nevada Baptists celebrated their 40th anniversary with a theme of "Legacy" that included memories of the past and vision for the future.

  Organized in October 1978 after nearly 30 years of Southern Baptist churches being started and informally cobbling together for fellowship, what is known today as the Nevada Baptist Convention began with 65 churches and missions and a $135,000 annual budget that included 10 percent -- $13,500 -- to missions through the Cooperative Program.

  Today, the Nevada convention encompasses 215 churches and plants and a 2019 budget of $2,248,220, which includes 50 percent of the anticipated $1,176,020 Cooperative Program giving from Nevada churches -- or $588,000 -- allocated to CP national and international missions and ministry. Read More

• GuideStone: 2019 health plans to see added benefits

  DALLAS (BP) -- Consultations with doctors through telemedicine will be available at no out-of-pocket charge for the majority of participants in the health plans of GuideStone Financial Services in 2019.

  The popular Teladoc service provides a consultation with board-certified physicians via phone or computer. Participants can have a prescription sent to a local pharmacy for pickup, though co-pays still apply.

  Additional enhancements include a new diabetic management program, elimination of some inpatient co-pays in comprehensive plans and reduced individual maximum out-of-pocket charges. Read More

• Indiana Baptists celebrate their 60th anniversary

  MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BP) -- The 60th anniversary of the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana was celebrated during the Oct. 8-9 annual meeting at Highland Lakes Baptist Camp with 160 messengers and 53 guests representing 80 churches across the state.

  The SCBI became the 29th convention in the Southern Baptist Convention on Oct. 3, 1958. E. Harmon Moore, elected as the SCBI's first executive secretary-treasurer, served 22 years in the position.

  The SCBI today encompasses 420 churches and church plants from the convention's initial 111 churches. Read More
