    LAKE FOREST, Calif. (BP) -- When Maria immigrated to California from Mexico, she knew she needed to learn English. What she didn't know was that, in doing so, she would also come to know Jesus Christ.

    Arbor Christian Fellowship in Lake Forest, Calif., has offered an ESL -- English as a Second Language -- school to Spanish speakers for many years. Today it is led by Sue Thompson and Rosie Montoya and supported by a team of volunteers. Read More

  • Send, TX relief efforts boost DR work in Harvey's wake

    VIDOR, Texas (BP) -- Traditionally trained Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams are receiving an influx of new workers in the form of newly minted volunteers signing on with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention's Texas Relief program, and college students recruited from across the United States to participate in the North American Mission Board's Send Relief outreach.

    Over the weekend of Oct 7, the first college crews from Send Relief descended upon churches in the Golden Triangle where teams of college kids were assigned to work alongside seasoned SBTC disaster relief volunteers. Read More

  • Study: Young Bible readers more likely to be faithful adults

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Most churchgoing Protestant parents of young adults say their kids grew up to be Christians.

    But half of them don't actually practice the Christian faith, their parents say, according to a LifeWay Research survey released today (Oct. 17). And the biggest factor predicting their spiritual health as young adults is whether they read the Bible regularly as kids.

    Those are among the findings of the study, which was conducted Sept. 22-Oct. 5, 2016, among Protestant churchgoers about parenting and spirituality. The survey was sponsored by LifeWay Kids for use in the book "Nothing Less: Engaging Kids in a Lifetime of Faith," which was released Oct. 2. Read More

  • Ten Commandments monument case declined by SCOTUS

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has declined an opportunity to revisit whether the display of religion-related monuments on government property is against the law.

    The court declined without explanation Monday (Oct. 16) to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling against a Ten Commandments monument outside the Bloomfield, N.M., City Hall. In lower courts, two Wiccans represented by the American Civil Liberties Union successfully challenged the five-foot monument, complaining that it constitutes the government's establishment of religion.     SANTA ROSA, Calif. (BP) -- As firefighters gained ground against the Northern California blaze Gov. Jerry Brown called perhaps "the greatest tragedy" the state "has ever faced," Southern Baptist disaster relief crews began feeding, cleanup and chaplaincy work today (Oct. 17).

    Meanwhile, the former main campus of Gateway Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif., was being used to shelter both evacuees and out-of-town fire crews, and a pastor in Calistoga, Calif., credited prayer with saving his town. Read More
