    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Abortion drew the spotlight today (Sept. 4) as the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee's confirmation hearings opened for judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump's nominee to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

    The Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, expressed concern about Kavanaugh's seeming willingness to restrict abortion rights, and more than 30 protestors were arrested in the hearing room, including some who touted abortion rights. Read More

  • Gordon's Gulf flood risks put DR volunteers on alert

    JACKSON, Miss. (BP) -- Anticipated flooding from Tropical Storm Gordon has Southern Baptist volunteers on alert in three Gulf Coast states, and may extend responses in the already-flooded Midwest as Gordon moves inland.

    The storm will likely intensify to a Category 1 hurricane as it comes ashore between western Alabama and eastern Louisiana this evening (Sept. 4), the Weather Channel reported, but will quickly weaken again to a tropical storm as it moves inland, perhaps over Arkansas. Read More

    SOUTH SUDAN (BP) -- The light was soft as Monica* weeded her garden on a community farm in South Sudan. A picture from that day shows her sitting quietly among other garden plots, her legs folded demurely under her thin body. A long scarf is tied around her head for protection from the blazing African sun.

    Susan Hatfield remembers the moment well. It was the day Monica learned that her nephew had been killed in a fight that took place while he had been watching over his family's cows. Read More

    FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (BP) -- Because of a trip to East Africa eight years ago and a life of twists and turns, Wesley Wallis believes God has equipped his family to start an orphanage in Kenya.

    "God has prepared me," said the pastor of Walstone Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C. "God has prepared my wife."
