  SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas (BP) -- First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, took another step forward with the opening of its new church building on Sunday (May 19). It's another example of how Southern Baptists continue to rally around the church, which lost 26 lives in a mass shooting Nov. 5, 2017.

• Dew nominated to lead New Orleans Seminary

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- James K. "Jamie" Dew Jr., vice president for undergraduate studies and distance learning at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, has been nominated as the next president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

  The presidential search committee will present Dew to the full trustee board for a vote on June 5. Read More

  FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (BP) -- Ronnie Floyd called them "holy moments." The senior pastor of Cross Church for nearly 33 years, Floyd preached his final sermon May 19 and commissioned his son Nick as his successor.

  "Pastor Nick and my son, even as [the apostle] Paul knelt and he prayed, I put my hands in your hands today as a sign and a symbol to our people that God is transferring this to you," Floyd said as both he and his son knelt before Cross Church's combined congregations at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.   ONTARIO, Calif. (BP) -- Gateway Seminary President Jeff Iorg is commissioning 142 Gateway Seminary graduates at five commencement ceremonies across the seminary's multi-campus system this spring to fulfill the mission of Jesus by engaging hurting people.

  Commencement for Gateway's main campus in Ontario, Calif., was held May 17 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Highland, Calif. At that ceremony, 72 graduates from 16 states and four countries received certificates, diplomas, master's and doctoral degrees. Read More

• Orlando pastor David Uth to be Pastors' Conf. nominee

  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- David Uth, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Orlando, will be nominated for president of the Southern Baptist Pastors' Conference in June, Georgia pastor James Merritt has announced.

  "David is a pastor's pastor, a spiritual statesman, and is universally respected in his state and across our convention," Merritt, pastor of the Atlanta-area Cross Pointe Church in Duluth, said in a May 17 announcement to Baptist Press. Read More
