  • First gene-edited babies 'a bridge too far'

    HONG KONG (BP) -- Evangelical bioethicists have joined many of their secular peers in condemning research that reportedly led to the birth this month of the world's first genetically edited babies. In addition to echoing secular scientists' concern about so-called "designer babies," the evangelicals objected to destruction of embryos which occurred in the gene-editing process.

    The reported birth of genetically edited twins in China has not been confirmed, according to media reports, and the research has not been published in an academic journal. Chinese scientist He Jiankui, who led the project, is scheduled to discuss his work in Hong Kong at an international conference on gene editing that begins today (Nov. 27). Read More

  • Study: Most churchgoers still abstain from alcohol

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Most churchgoers say the Bible teaches against drunkenness. But that doesn't stop about 4 in 10 from taking a drink now and then, a study released Tuesday (Nov. 27) shows.

    While 41 percent of Protestant churchgoers say they consume alcohol, 59 percent say they do not. That's a slight shift from 10 years ago, according to the LifeWay Research survey, which was conducted Aug. 22-30, 2017.

    In a 2007 phone survey by LifeWay Research, 39 percent of Protestant churchgoers said yes they consumed alcohol while 61 percent said no. Read More

  • DR efforts continue in Carolinas, across U.S.

    LONGS, S.C. (BP) -- Pastor Lebron Crisp of Living Water Baptist Church challenged his congregation to look for opportunities to reach hurting people after Hurricane Florence struck the church's community just a few miles northwest of North Myrtle Beach. The storm's flood waters damaged hundreds of homes including several homes of church members.

    "It just breaks our hearts. I want to be out here [helping] every waking second," said Crisp, founding pastor and pastor of the church in Longs, S. C., for 29 years.

    Crisp, church members and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) volunteers reached out to deacon Russ Frye and his wife Gerry, who lost most everything in their home of 19 years in the Aberdeen community. Read More

  • Tebows 'called' to 'Run the Race' film

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Jake McEntire was a movie-minded student at Dallas Baptist University in 2004 when he felt God leading him to write a film script. Thanks to prodding from a few friends -- and lots of prayer -- McEntire finally did so.

    McEntire's 14-year-old screenplay becomes reality Feb. 22 when "Run the Race" is released in theaters. Former NFL and college football player Tim Tebow and his brother Robby served as executive producers, while Chris Dowling (Where Hope Grows) directed it. The WTA Group, a company that helped market "I Can Only Imagine," also was involved. Read More

  • Neighbors, nations not alone, SBC Va. proclaims

    HAMPTON, Va. (BP) -- Cooperation aimed at reaching neighbors and nations with the Gospel was the focus of the 2018 Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia Annual Homecoming Nov. 11-13 in Hampton.

    Effective since an October vote of the SBCV executive board, the state convention retains its founding name of Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia, but in business matters refers to itself as the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia and SBC of Virginia.

    "They are Not Alone" was the theme, capping a 2017 theme of "We are Not Alone." Read More
