  NASHVILLE (BP) -- Baptist minister C.C. Davison encountered recently drafted soldier Grover Cleaver Sept. 12, 1918, on the back steps of an Army mess hall. Grover appeared dejected over the telegram announcing his mother's death. Sitting on the steps, Davison wrote in Arkansas' Baptist Advance newsjournal, "I marked for him a tract furnished by our Sunday School Board" and "led him to the Savior." A month later, Cleaver was dead.

• Final rules guard conscience from abortion mandate

  WASHINGTON (BP) -- The seven-year battle by objectors to the abortion/contraception mandate has come to a regulatory close with a victory for freedom of conscience.

  The Trump administration issued two final rules Nov. 7 that supply conscience protections to Americans with a religious or moral objection to the 2011 mandate instituted under President Obama. Announcement of the regulations came a day after an election that resulted in the Republican president's party losing control of the U.S. House of Representatives while maintaining its Senate majority.   NASHVILLE (BP) -- Long-standing patterns continued to dominate the 2017 Annual Church Profile report released in June. The number of congregations cooperating with the Southern Baptist Convention increased over 2016 totals, while reported membership and baptisms continued their year-over-year decline.

  ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Michael, numerous reports described the devastation in the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and Alabama in terms of warfare -- bombs going off and missiles launching into buildings. After traveling to the affected areas and writing an article of my own, these analogies certainly did fit.

  GREENSBORO, N.C. (BP) -- North Carolina Baptists approved a 2019 budget, elected a new slate of officers and adopted a resolution honoring the late Billy Graham during the 2018 Baptist State Convention of North Carolina's (BSCNC) annual meeting, which emphasized loving one's neighbors and reaching them for Christ.

  A total of 1,425 messengers attended the meeting, which was held Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 5-6) at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C. The event's theme was "Who Is My Neighbor?" based on the question asked of Jesus in Luke 10:29 in the parable of the Good Samaritan. Read More

  HAVERHILL, Mass. (BP) -- "Church planting is the natural consequence of intimacy with God," Tanner Turley, a church planter based in greater Boston, noted during a testimony at the Baptist Convention of New England's 36th annual meeting.
