  ALEXANDRIA, La. (BP) -- It was the gift that keeps on giving. A kind uncle encouraged a sensitive 17-year-old boy to write about life in a journal, suggesting the best place to start might be "the good, the bad and the in-between."

  Forty-plus years, 12 books and more than 1,200 blog posts later, Curt Iles still keeps a journal -- the beginning point of a writing career that's taken him to Africa and back.

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Masey McLain, daughter of a Georgia Baptist pastor, knew God intended her to play the true-to-life movie character Rachel Joy Scott, a Columbine victim, even when the part first went to someone else.

  "I'm Not Ashamed," a PG-13 movie that opened nationwide Oct. 21, stars McLain in her first leading role. • Cubs' curse notion rejected by Piniella, Coppenger

  CHICAGO (BP) -- With the Chicago Cubs hoping to break the so-called "Curse of the Billy Goat" and win their first World Series since 1908, former Cubs manager Lou Piniella and longtime Cubs fan Mark Coppenger say their Christian worldviews lead them to reject baseball superstitions.

  "Really it's all bologna," Piniella, Cubs manager from 2006-10, said of the alleged curse. Yet there is "a lot of superstition" associated with the Cubs. "Over there in Chicago they haven't had success in so long that if you lose three or four games in a row," fans start to think, "Boy, the curse is on." Read More

• N.C. anticipates weeks of continued Matthew recovery

  CARY, N.C. (BP) -- Scenes reminiscent of the aftermath of 1999's Hurricane Floyd are playing out across a 250-mile stretch of North Carolina. Already North Carolina Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers, and those from seven other states, have served Hurricane Matthew survivors by preparing more than 400,000 meals from six SBDR kitchens.

  North Carolina Baptist Men Disaster Relief director Gaylon Moss said some of the same areas affected by Floyd were hard hit again by Matthew. Moss said volunteer days served in North Carolina have already surpassed 7,000. Read More

  WEST SACRAMENTO (BP) -- Messengers to the 2016 California Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting celebrated the 22-year tenure of the CSBC executive director, elected a new slate of officers and approved a 2017 budget during their 76th session that celebrated "Generations Reaching Generations."

  Held at Russian Baptist Church in West Sacramento Oct. 25-26, the gathering featured a number of CSBC and Southern Baptist Convention entities recognizing Fermín A. Whittaker for his service. (BP) -- El recién designado grupo de trabajo de discipulado de Recursos Cristianos LifeWay y de la Junta de Misiones Norteamericanas se reunió el lunes 17 de octubre en el edificio de NAMB en Alpharetta, Ga. El grupo de 11 pastores bautistas se reunió para hablar sobre su tarea de comunicar que "una iglesia de cualquier trasfondo puede discipular," de acuerdo al presidente Robby Gallaty, pastor de la Iglesia Bautista Long Hollow en Hendersonville, Tenn.
