  • High court's order on Nevada church draws dissent

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Religious freedom advocates and four justices expressed strong disagreement with the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to grant relief to a church seeking equal treatment under Nevada's coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

    The high court denied July 24 a request from Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley (Nev.) to block enforcement of Gov. Steve Sisolak's order that limits religious gatherings to 50 worshipers regardless of the size of the building. Meanwhile, his directive permits casinos, gyms, bowling alleys and some other venues to operate at 50 percent capacity regardless of their size. Read More

  • 2021 SBC Annual Meeting preparations and planning underway

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- After the cancellation of the 2020 SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando, preparations are underway for the 2021 meeting to be held in Nashville at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center.

    SBC Executive Committee President Ronnie Floyd is hosting a video conference call Aug. 11 with Tennessee-area pastors to share more about the event and encourage as many churches as possible to send messengers to the 2021 Annual Meeting. Scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CDT, the call is expected to last around 45 minutes. Read More

    NAVASOTA, Texas (AP/RNS) -- Before the barbecue trailer, there was the toilet paper popemobile.

    With toilet paper hard to come by as stay-at-home orders took effect in many states earlier this year to stem the spread of the coronavirus, Chad McMillan put the pastor of First Baptist Church of Navasota, Texas, on a trailer surrounded by plexiglass, "like the popemobile," he said. He handed the pastor a T-shirt gun loaded with toilet paper, each roll wrapped with a Bible verse. Read More

    RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Using a fill-in-the-blank quiz, LifeWay Christian Resources' Mark Croston evoked phrases that have long spoken to the consciences of Black folks.

    He was teaching the early morning Bible exposition at the 2020 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference (BCLFC), held July 20-24 as on online-only event during the COVID-19 pandemic. He guided virtual attendees in completing the phrases. Read More

  • Pastors sign letter urging Democrats to adopt pro-life stance

    More than 100 Christian leaders signed a letter sent July 24 to the Democratic National Committee calling for the organization to shed "abortion extremism" and embrace pro-life policies.

    The group urged the political party's platform committee to "recognize the inviolable human dignity of the child," citing theological, scientific and political reasons. Read More
