  WASHINGTON (BP) -- The liberties enshrined in the Constitution are today "confused, contorted, and sometimes even condemned," R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said at the National Religious Broadcasters' First Amendment Lunch in Washington on May 3.

  "Religious freedom, freedom of speech and the freedom of the press -- along with the other rights recognized and respected within the Bill of Rights -- are all threatened even as other rights are marginalized," Mohler said during the NRB gathering on Capitol Hill sponsored by In Touch Ministries. • Venezuela's economic crisis prompts BGR relief

  VENEZUELA (BP) -- Baptist Global Response (BGR) is organizing relief efforts to help starving families trapped in Venezuela's current economic crisis.

  The country's economic output is expected to shrink by 15 percent this year, which would be the third consecutive year it has decreased by double digits, Forbes.com reported. And inflation has reportedly grown from 112 percent in 2015 to 2,400 percent last year. In 2018, it's expected to hit five-digits. Read More

  MIAMI (BP) -- The sandy beaches of Key Biscayne will serve as an inspiring picture of South Florida as people from multiple races, cultures, ethnicities and generations unite for a day of picnics and festivities at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Saturday, May 5.

  WASHINGTON (BP) -- Southern Baptist and other evangelical speakers called for, and hundreds of participants prayed for, unity in the church and country during a National Day of Prayer observance May 3 in the U.S. Capitol.

  The televised evening event in National Statuary Hall came near the close of the United States' 67th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer (NDOP). Multitudes of Americans gathered in thousands of location across the country to pray during the day. Read More

  HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (BP) -- A triennial gathering involving hundreds of collegiate ministry workers "inspires us to go back to our campus with new ideas and a fresh take on things," said Arkansas campus minister Dawn Reed.

  That's why she returned to LifeWay Christian Resources' Collegiate Summit, hosted this year May 2-4 by First Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tenn.

  Collegiate Summit featured plenary addresses, networking opportunities and breakout sessions on issues facing college ministers. • 2 Pulse massacre survivors in ex-LGBT Freedom March

  WASHINGTON (BP) -- Two survivors of a 2016 gay nightclub massacre who say they are no longer gay will celebrate in an ex-LGBT event May 5 in Washington, event organizers said.

  Luis Javier Ruiz and Angel Colon will participate in Freedom March, a worship service and public march including men and women who claim Jesus as their deliverer from homosexual and transgendered lifestyles.

  Many ex-LGBT Christians plan to worship and testify from noon-3 p.m. at the Sylvan Theater, afterwards marching through the streets of D.C., according to the Freedom March Facebook page. Read More

• LifeWay named one of America's top employers for 2nd year

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- LifeWay Christian Resources is ranked as one of the top 500 midsize employers in the U.S. by Forbes magazine for a second consecutive year.

  LifeWay landed at No. 196 on the "America's Best Midsize Employers" list. The Christian publishing house and retail organization drew high marks from its employees. To determine the ranking, Forbes looks at how likely workers are to recommend their employer to someone else and how they feel about the other employers in their industry. Read More
