    LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. (BP) -- Awaiting his coronavirus (COVID-19) test results, Long Island City, N.Y., pastor Patrick Thompson was self-quarantined at home with a sore throat and a 102-degree fever. But the LIC Relief ministry he co-founded before he took ill still was blessing many beyond his closed bedroom door.

    As Thompson lay recovering, LIC (Long Island City) Relief volunteer Ebony delivered meals in the nearby Queens Bridge neighborhood to the Hour Children ministry helping formerly incarcerated women reconnect with their children. Read More

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic "is no time to turn our eyes away from the sanctity of human life," Southern Baptist ethicist Russell Moore said in a column published Thursday (March 26) in The New York Times.

    Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), wrote in response to recent suggestions from government officials and others "about weighing the value of human life against the health of the nation's economy and the strength of the stock market," he said in the column.   • Send Relief distributes 50,000 meals in Puerto Rico

    GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico (BP) -- On Sunday, March 15, Puerto Rico implemented an island-wide curfew in response to COVID-19. Under the curfew, all nonessential businesses -- those not providing food, cleaning services or health and medical services -- were required to shut down, with all travel by the population limited during the day and restricted during nighttime hours. Since then, Send Relief has responded by distributing more than 50,000 meals to vulnerable residents across the island through 50 local churches. Read More

  • Senate OKs coronavirus bill without charitable cap increase

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The U.S. Senate approved without opposition late Wednesday (March 25) a coronavirus relief bill estimated to cost $2 trillion, but did not include an amendment designed to encourage charitable giving.

    Senators voted 96-0 for the legislation after several days of negotiations among the White House and Democrats and Republicans in the upper chamber. The immense economic package is intended to provide help to a broad swath of American society -- including workers, small businesses, state and local governments, hospitals and education -- while social-distancing and shelter-in-place efforts are in effect.     El Senado fracasó el lunes (23 de marzo) por segunda vez en aprobar un voto procedural para someter a votación y debate un paquete económico que supuestamente costará entre $1.6 trillones y casi $2 trillones.
