  GATLINBURG, Tenn. (BP) -- The youth of Roaring Fork Baptist Church are not unlike countless other teenagers participating in Youth Bible Drill, preparing for associational and state competitions later this spring.

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- Black History Month gives Americans a yearly spotlight on such key figures in U.S. history as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr.

  Few Southern Baptists, however, have considered key African American figures in SBC history like Garland Offutt, Emmanuel McCall and Fred Luter -- the first African Americans respectively to attend a Southern Baptist Convention seminary, serve on an SBC entity staff and be elected SBC president. • Gene Fant elected as North Greenville's president

  TIGERVILLE, S.C. (BP) -- Gene C. Fant Jr. has been named the eighth president of North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C.

  Fant, 53, has served as provost and chief academic officer since 2014 at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was introduced as "God's man" for North Greenville by trustee chairman Bill Tyler at a Feb. 23 news conference at the NGU campus following a unanimous trustee vote. Read More

• Post-flood ministry yields church's wave of baptisms

  WELSH, La. (BP) -- The waters may have receded several months ago but the excitement at First Baptist Church hasn't subsided.

  First came the rain to Welsh, La. -- nearly 24 inches in a 24-hour period during widespread flooding in the southern part of the state.

  Soon after, the congregation began ministering to those hurting in its own area, paving the way for a spiritual harvest. Not only have they seen 13 baptisms since the flood of August 2016 but attendance has not waned, reaching 100 on an average Sunday morning for worship. Read More

  ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- The SBC Executive Committee and North American Mission Board are launching a young leader initiative to better engage pastors between the ages of 25-45.
