NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Woman's Missionary Union Executive Director Wanda S. Lee introduced the newly elected president of national WMU and expressed appreciation for Southern Baptists' support of North American and international missionaries during her report to the Southern Baptist Convention June 21 in Nashville, Tenn.

"For the first time in the history of WMU, an MK [missionary kid] has been elected to serve as president of national WMU," Lee said. WMU is an auxiliary of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Kaye Miller of Little Rock, Ark., was elected to succeed Janet Hoffman of Farmerville, La., as national WMU president during the WMU Mission Celebration and Annual Meeting June 19-20 at First Baptist Church in Nashville.

With nearly 1,400 in attendance, participants at the annual WMU event were challenged and inspired to grow closer in their relationship with Christ and to pass on their passion for missions.

Miller brings a lifetime of missions experiences to her new role as the 21st president of national WMU. She grew up in Thailand where her parents, Harlan and Jo Willis, served as medical missionaries for more than 20 years. Miller has served as president of Arkansas WMU since 2002 and is the director of Acteens and Youth on Mission at Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock, Ark.

Lee recognized and thanked Hoffman for the 13 years she served on the WMU executive board, having been a vice president and recording secretary before serving as president for the past five years.

Lee also reported that the WMU executive board approved a goal of $150 million for the 2006 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and a goal of $57 million for the 2007 Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions. She expressed appreciation for the prayer support and sacrificial giving from Southern Baptists that make it possible for missionaries to minister around the world in the name of Jesus.
